I HAD BEEN DRIVING for hours, chasing the dark to the first glimmers of dawn. Next to me, Charlotte started, moaning and breathing heavily.
“Nightmare?” I asked, my hands tightening around the steering wheel.
She blinked, massaging the kinks in her neck. She was groggy from sleep and stunningly gorgeous. A lazy smile tugged at her mouth as her eyes focused on me, then she sighed once again, remembering our earlier argument.
“No,” she said. It was a lie.
She struggled to stretch, but the interior of the car was not very accommodating. Her hand bumped against the back of my neck, then her fingers settled on my nape, painting teasing circles across my skin.
“Aren’t you mad at me anymore?” I asked, throwing her a wary glance. Although her ministrations were threatening my concentration, I didn’t want her to stop.
“I wasn’t mad. I’m just scared, for both of us.”
“We’ll pull through.”
Without the burden that had been choking me, came an inner solace that offered me an optimistic vision for the future.
Charlotte’s fingers didn’t stop working my flesh. Encouraged by my sharp intakes of breath and my gradual relaxation, she unwound as well.
“You are driving like a machine,” Charlotte said after glancing at the dash clock. It had been about five hours since we left Vinny’s mansion, and we were already lacing through Ohio.
“After being called a maniac, that should be a compliment.”
“You should pull up at the next gas station,” she said, unimpressed by my joke, but still pressing a kiss to my cheek.
We stopped in Richmond. Charlotte jumped out of the car, stretching her arms and doing a couple of squats. After I filled the tank, I clamped her shoulder and pulled her inside the station. We used the restrooms and grabbed some ham sandwiches, protein bars, two water bottles, and hot coffee, dark like Charlotte preferred it.
We paid for our purchases then walked outside in the comforting morning air. I lifted Charlotte onto the hood of the Mustang and joined her with a wink. We chewed on our sandwiches in silence, reveling in the beauty of being together.
At the horizon, a pinkish-gold light was piercing the dark, embracing the sun as it gingerly sprouted from the silky night clouds. Charlotte nestled her head in the crook of my neck, absorbing the poetry in the sky with greedy eyes even as her nose turned red and her hands burrowed under her jacket, looking for warmth.
“I love you,” she whispered, stroking my jaw with the hot softness of her lips.
Those three words always left me breathless. They were the exquisite weapon she could wield to enslave me.
“Sweet Charlotte,” I gasped.
Stroking her cheek, I bent down where her mouth was already open and waiting.
“Give me the keys,” she said, her hand sliding between our bodies, searching for the pocket of my jeans. “I’ll drive.”
“Did you just use a kiss to manipulate me?” I asked, pretending to be outraged.
“No,” she giggled and stuck out her hand, palm up and fingers curling in anticipation.
Sometimes, I forgot how innocent and sweet she could get.
